ELLIS Academic - Now Available at the North Port Library
Literacy Volunteers has partnered with the North Port Library to provide independent, self-paced instruction in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and some Basic Literacy through ELLIS Academic 3 software. ELLIS Academic 3 is an alternative to traditional one-to-one instruction. Software tutorials have been installed on two dedicated computers in the North Port Library and are available for students waiting for a personal tutor, learners who want to supplement their class and/or private instruction, or those who prefer to study on their own. ELLIS Academic 3 software combines digital audio and video, voice recording, role play, and native language support to create an engaging environment for every level of English language training, from true beginner to full fluency. This program is especially useful at the lowest level of literacy. Native Language Help is available in over 60 languages. It allows ESOL learners to quickly know how to use ELLIS Academic 3 by translating screen instructions and explaining "How To" navigate within the software. This support is a passive feature (instruction is always given in English first) and naturally tapers off as the student advances. A few Native Language Guide booklets have been purchased for lower literacy levels to translate key content such as vocabulary, phrases, and culture.
