The Literacy Volunteers of South Sarasota County (LVSSC) is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, a national non-profit organization. We believe that the ability to speak, read, and write English is critical to achieving personal freedom, enhancing personal economic well-being, and fostering a democratic society. Our focus then is to help adult residents of South Sarasota County, Florida, improve their abilities to speak, read, and write English at no charge to them and with their privacy respected at all times. If you can read, write, speak English, and want to help someone, you can become a trained tutor. We offer a comprehensive training program to prepare volunteers to tutor native-born students in basic literacy and foreign-born students in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). We also provide you with teaching resources and ongoing support after your training. Prior teaching experience or knowledge of a language other than English is not needed. All that's required is your willingness to help, the completion of a 12-hour training course, and about 3 hours a week for tutoring. Students and tutors generally meet 1.5 hours twice a week at a time and public place convenient to both; however, this pattern is flexible. Call us at 941-488-8994 to start changing lives through literacy. |
