Student Success Stories

A woman we will call Alena, her husband and their 2-year-old son arrived in North Port five years ago from Belarus to join her brother who has lived here for 20 years. After 'big brother' arrived here, he advised Alena to continue to study English in Belarus. She did; from first grade through her university education.

But, even with this sound foundation in English, she felt like she "didn't know anything" when she arrived here. In Belarus, Alena was a teacher of Biology and Math and was a school vice principal. She had a dream to also one day teach in the U.S. but knew that her English needed to drastically improve to make that happen.

She once again relied on her brother's advice. He told her about our literacy program at the North Port Library and she enrolled. And although she immediately started attending our classes and was supported by a tutor, Alena felt her progress was too slow after about a year. To speed up her learning, she knew that she needed to surround herself with English speakers.

To make this happen, she began volunteering at the Kindergarten Prep School in North Port. Through this experience, Alena was eventually offered a teacher position at the Kindergarten Prep School. She then took the required proficiency tests in Developmental Knowledge, English, Math, and Science and became qualified to teach from pre-school through third grade.

Her hard work paid off. This summer she began her employment as a third-grade teacher at a North Port Elementary School.

    LIFE TRANSFORMATION

Mario came to Florida from Venezuela. When he arrived, he only spoke Spanish. He took the risk of coming to America as an immigrant, because he heard about how our country is a ‘melting pot’ of people from all over the world.

He came here very motivated because he wants to be able to provide a better life for his family. And believes through hard work he can make that dream happen.  He was matched with Sid, who helped him learn English and they talked a lot about American culture. Mario was a quick learner and before long he got a good job with a local business. Thank you Sid for investing in Mario’s success!”

    IMPROVED CONFIDENCE

Tony is 60-year old American who dropped out of school at 15. After years of living with the fear of being “discovered” as a non-reader, Tony sought help from LVSSC. The stress of trying to write reports at his gate guard job and the fear of losing his job was affecting his health. As a result of Tony’s sessions with his tutor, Carolyn, he was able to write reports with new confidence, find a new job, and write a letter to his daughter on her birthday for the first time.

    LANDED A JOB!

Ernie, a new tutor, was matched with Tarek from Egypt who had been in the U.S. for 15 years but needed to improve his language skills so he could find a better job. They met every week to work on his English for half the lesson and the other half of lesson they looked for employment using Craig’s List.

They persevered together in a job search for Tarek, who had never used a computer before. So, Ernie taught him the basics. After submitting some 50 on-line applications, Tarek finally got an interview with a local golf course. He was hired part-time as a ground’s maintenance worker. Because he was dependable and worked hard, after a couple months he became a full-time employee.

  • Lynne & Winnie

    STRIVING & ACHIEVING

Winnie immigrated to the U.S. from China where she was a pediatric nurse. Now she works as a restaurant manager. Her tutor, Lynne, is a retired nurse so they both share medical backgrounds as a bond. “Winnie is always striving to do more and to be more,” says Lynne. “Her attitude is always positive. Winnie is a very hard-working person. I think she takes that approach with everything she does, not just her job.” Lynne says that she often sees immigrants like Winnie working harder than those of us born in America, “because they are striving so hard to build the lives they want in another country.”
